Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Scottsdale Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Scottsdale typically runs $130 to $250 installed, and we stock Clopay-compatible cables and drums on our trucks for same-day replacement in most cases. You’ll usually find out this part has failed when the door suddenly drops to one side mid-cycle, makes a grinding noise near the top, or refuses to lift at all while the opener motor runs. The cable is the braided steel line that carries the door’s weight, and the drum is the grooved wheel at the end of the torsion tube that winds that cable evenly.

We’re an independent service provider, not a Clopay dealer. That matters because we’re not tied to one parts chain. We match what your door actually needs, OEM or a quality equivalent, and we show you the failed part before we quote the replacement. Marcus Deller names the part, quotes the range, then picks up the wrench. That’s how every Clopay cable and drum job goes here.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has built residential doors across several series lines, and cable and drum compatibility is not universal. The part that fits a Clopay Gallery series door is not automatically the right match for a Clopay Classic or Coachman series door. The drum diameter, the cable length, and the cable diameter are matched to the door’s height, weight, and spring system. A 7-foot door and an 8-foot door need different cable lengths even when they look identical from the outside.

Clopay stamps a model number on a label near the bottom section or on the hinge side of the door, and that number is the fastest route to the correct part. If the label is gone or painted over, we measure the drum’s outer diameter, count the cable grooves, and check the cable’s wire diameter with a micrometer. On Clopay doors specifically, we also check whether the door uses a standard lift or a high-lift track set, because high-lift drums are larger and wind more cable per revolution. The OEM versus aftermarket decision for Clopay parts is usually straightforward for cables and drums: quality aftermarket steel cable from a manufacturer that supplies the trade performs the same as the Clopay-branded part, and we tell you which we’re quoting and why. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers when the issue turns out to be the opener, not the cable set.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door lifts unevenly or hangs crooked. One cable has stretched, frayed, or jumped the drum groove, so that side carries less tension than the other. This is often the first visible sign, and it shows up before total failure.
  • A snapping noise followed by the door slamming down or refusing to move. A cable parted under tension. When this happens on a Clopay door, the remaining cable and drum are usually damaged in the same event from the sudden unbalanced load.
  • The cable looks frayed, kinked, or has visible broken strands near the bottom bracket. Arizona’s dry heat accelerates cable wear, but the bottom bracket area is where we see most strand breaks because that’s where the cable bends and takes the most concentrated stress on every cycle.
  • The drum shows grooves that are worn smooth or scored. Once the drum’s cable grooves lose their crisp edges, the cable walks out of the track and wraps unevenly. A scored drum will shred a new cable within weeks, so both parts get replaced as a set.
  • The door makes a grinding or chattering noise near the top while moving. The cable is jumping in and out of a worn drum groove, usually with visible metal dust or shavings on the torsion tube. In Scottsdale garages, that fine dust also mixes with the typical desert grit and accelerates the wear.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed Clopay cable and drum replacement in Scottsdale runs $130 to $250 for both cables and both drums as a matched set. We do not replace one side only. A single new cable on a worn drum fails quickly, and a single new drum on a stretched cable throws the door out of balance, so both are written into the scope together.

What drives the range is door height and drum type. A standard 7-foot Clopay door with standard drums sits at the lower end. An 8-foot door, a high-lift track system, or a heavier solid-wood door pushes toward the upper end because the parts cost more and the job takes longer. The price you get is flat, written, and includes the parts, labor, balance check, and lubrication of the rollers and hinges. It also includes the documented photo record of the failed parts and the completed work, delivered before our technician leaves. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right. You’ll know the exact price before any work starts, per Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. We don’t do verbal estimates.

You can safely check a few things yourself. Look at both cables with the door closed and note whether one is visibly loose, frayed, or off the drum. Check whether the door is hanging level. Snap a photo of the drum and cable on each side. That’s where safe owner involvement ends.

The cables and drums on a Clopay torsion system are under enough tension to remove fingers or worse if the assembly lets go while you’re working on it. The cable runs from a bracket at the bottom of the door to a drum on a tube that is preloaded with the same stored energy as a garage torsion spring, even when the door is open. If you’ve lost a cable, do not try to re-seat it by hand. Do not detach the opener and muscle the door up. One slipped drum or a spring that unwinds against the winding cone is the difference between a $250 repair and a hospital visit. We carry the parts, the correct tools, and the padding on the labor.
